Relations between Creativity and reading: an integrative review
Abstract
The present work aimed to investigate the relationship between creativity and reading through the methodology of integrative literature review. In four databases (Scielo, Pepsic, PubMed, Eric) the following combinations of descriptors were sought: “creativity and reading” and “creativity and reading skills”. By the 2,418 articles found, nine were selected. There was a prevalence of research in two thematic areas: (a) reading and creativity as a literary, artistic, emotional aspect (n = 3); (b) reading and creativity associated with cognition (n = 5); both fields (n = 1). Most studies were quantitative (n = 5), cross-sectional (n = 6), with large samples (n = 8) and with children and adolescents (n = 6). All research showed a positive relationship between creativity and reading, from weak significant correlations to consolidated associations through playfulness and the construction of critical and creative thinking through reading.
